I would definitely not recommend this plant. Now in its second year, my buckeye is a real disappointment. While I began with a good-sized, healthy plant, put it in a good location and water it regularly, the plant only looks good in the spring. During the heat of the summer, its leaves turn brown and look ugly all the way through fall.

I would defintely recommend this tree for the yard. It is the first plant that blooms in my yard as the hummingbird arrives. Friends love to come to my yard to collect the lucky buckeye.I overlook the leaf problem just to grow it for the bloom and the seed.

"I would give this tree a ""10"" if possible. It is by far my favorite native tree. I've started propagating it from seed which is so simple. I usually get 50-100 buckeyes a year.
To avoid the leaf problem, I've found the tree does better if it gets some afternoon shade."

Aesculus pavia is worth growing just for its bold foliage, and the flower is quite showy, however the last two years wind has virtually broken off the branches of my 3-4 foot tall new plant, so I'll have to find a more wind-protected spot.

We love this plant w/ its large salmon colored flowers , handsome leaf configuration and large fascinating autumn fruit. its disadvantages are that it loses its foliage very early and it is adored by our recently arrived pest plague- winter moth.

I'm the one who gave the low rating, which I've revised upward. The reason is that someone advised spraying the leaves with wilt-pruf, which definitely helped with the scorch problem. The leaves look a little waxy, but at least they are green.

Love this in naturalized setting. Seems to prefer more shade than I originally thought and so I have transplanted them but look better in second year in shady location. Red flowers and seed pods provide spring and summer interest.

It is wonderful for spring interest. The blooms are spectacular! The buckeye seed pods are interesting but fall leaf color is not what you should purchase this little tree for. It is tough as nails.

Right now I am a bit disappointed in this tree. I originally planted it in 2007. It was just under 2 ft. tall when I got it. It is now 5 ft. tall and has never bloomed. I bought it because I wanted a tree/shrub that would be in bloom and provide nectar about the time the hummers arrived here in Western NY. After 4 yrs. I am still waiting to see it bloom.
