Best grown in moist, organically rich, well-drained loams in full sun to part shade. Generally intolerant of soil extremes (dry or wet). Prune as needed after flowering.
‘Solar Flair’ is a yellow-flowered hybrid magnolia whose parents are M. x brooklynensis ‘Woodsman’ and M. ‘Gold Star’. This is a deciduous, straight-trunked tree with a pyramidal crown that is expected to mature over time to about 30’ tall. Upright, deep yellow flowers (to 5” tall) appear in spring before the foliage emerges. Each flower is tinged light rose at the base. Medium green leaves (to 8” long and 6” wide) are textured. Genus name honors Pierre Magnol, French botanist (1638-1715).
No serious insect or disease problems. Watch for scale.
