The Garden offers unpaid internships designed for you to obtain academic credit or credentials to fulfill requirements of an apprenticeship or to experience professional development, perhaps in an area new to your career.  Unpaid interns receive free admission to the Garden, as well as discounts at our retail shops and Sassafras Cafe during the internship period.

Horticulture Irrigation Technician Intern

Classification: Part-time, Intern (unpaid)
Dept/Div: Horticulture

Irrigation technician will learn how to operate the Garden’s new Rain Master Eagle Plus irrigation controllers as well as the existing Rain Bird controllers. The technician will then utilize this information to initiate any repairs on a zonal basis. Sprinkler heads will be straightened, nozzles cleaned and adjusted or replaced as proper operation requires. All parts and equipment needed will be provided by Horticulture.

The purpose of this effort is to ensure the correct amount of water is being applied to the various plants in the Garden’s living collections and at the same time make certain we keep runoff and waste to a minimum thereby using our water resources in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Requirements:

  • 20 to 40 hours per week
  • Basic understanding of irrigation systems
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions plus frequently getting wet as repairs are made and tested
  • Able to walk the Garden extensively for most or the entire shift
  • Able to kneel and bend and do minimal digging to make repairs
  • High School Diploma or GED

Internship dates: System is active from 1 April to 1 November (start and end dates are flexible).
