BiodiverseCity St. Louis Community Engagement Intern

Classification: part time (unpaid)

The Community Engagement Internship will support the Missouri Botanical Garden’s efforts to grow and strengthen BiodiverseCity St. Louis, a community-wide initiative – powered by a coalition of regional partnersto promote, propel, and restore biodiversity throughout the greater St. Louis region. The essence of the BiodiverseCity St. Louis is communicating the value of biodiversity to community stakeholders with governance over land use (schools, universities, businesses, municipalities, government agencies, faith-based centers, community campuses, and homeowners) in such a way that leads to implementation of ecological landscaping and other nature-inspired techniques that quantifiably increase biodiversity in the region.

This internship is a great opportunity to expand technical knowledge related to biodiversity and learn best practices in public education and engagement in the topic of biodiversity conservation. This intern will work with the leadership of multiple Garden divisions including Sustainability, Education, Science & Conservation and Institutional Advancement. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining list-serve of all BiodiverseCity STL stakeholders.
  • Assist in ongoing updating of BiodiverseCity STL web-based portal and social media forums.
  • Assist in development and distribution of outgoing communications, including e-news, community presentations (ppts, prezi, etc.), print collateral, etc.
  • Compiling a list and description of local action projects promoting, protecting and/or restoring local biodiversity.
  • Research and report compelling techniques and strategies for communicating the value of biodiversity.
  • Assist in tracking local research and data associated with restoring biodiversity.

  • Working knowledge and sincere interest in the topic of biodiversity
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Self-starter
  • Desire to work with and collaborate with others
  • Uses all programs of Microsoft Office

  • High School Diploma
  • One to two years of college study
  • Preferred coursework, interest or experience in environmental sciences, life sciences, and education.
  • Available between January 2017 and December 20172014 with the ability to work 10-15 hours/week. Can adjust schedule to fit school/work obligations.
