Best grown in medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Plants tolerate some dry soils. Plants also tolerate heat and humidity. Seed may be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant seedlings outside after last frost date. Plant stems may be pinched in spring to promote bushier growth. Plants will reseed in the garden.
Snow-on-the-mountain is an annual that is grown for its attractive green and white variegated foliage. Species plants are native to northwestern Missouri, but have also escaped gardens and naturalized in other parts of the state. This plant typically grows to 2’ tall. Oval upper leaves (to 3” long) are green with showy white margins. Tiny inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in clusters in summer subtended by showy white to greenish-white bracts. Stems and leaves contain a milky sap that often irritates human skin and is poisonous if ingested. ‘Kilimanjaro’ is slightly taller than the species and blooms earlier.
No serious insect or disease problems.
An excellent annual variegated foliage plant for borders, meadows and cutting gardens.
