Culture

Easily grown in humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Best sited in sheltered locations. Soil must not be allowed to dry out. Naturalizes well by creeping rhizomes and can form colonies in optimum growing conditions.

Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum, commonly known as northern lady fern, is a deciduous, upright fern that typically grows to 36” tall and features light green fronds on short-creeping rhizomes. It is native to eastern and central North America and is somewhat common in Missouri, particularly north of the Missouri River (Steyermark). ‘Lady in Red’ is a cultivar that typically grows slightly smaller (18-30” tall) and features elliptic lacy light green fronds with contrasting burgundy-red stipes. Synonymous with Athyrium angustum f. rubellum ‘Lady in Red’.
