Noteworthy Characteristics

‘Solar Flair’ is a yellow-flowered hybrid magnolia whose parents are M. x brooklynensis ‘Woodsman’ and M. ‘Gold Star’. This is a deciduous, straight-trunked tree with a pyramidal crown that is expected to mature over time to about 30’ tall. Upright, deep yellow flowers (to 5” tall) appear in spring before the foliage emerges. Each flower is tinged light rose at the base. Medium green leaves (to 8” long and 6” wide) are textured. Genus name honors Pierre Magnol, French botanist (1638-1715).

Problems

No serious insect or disease problems. Watch for scale.
