Culture

Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring. Plants tend to sucker.

Noteworthy Characteristics

AMETHYST is a deciduous coralberry shrub that is noted for the abundant supply and vivid color of its deep purple pink berries. It is a Doorenbos hybrid (S. albus var. laevitigatus x S. x chenaultii) that typically grows 3-5’ tall and as wide. Elliptic to broad ovate dark green leaves (to 1.5” long). Tiny greenish white flowers in short racemes appear in summer, but are somewhat insignificant. Flowers are followed by clusters of globose, purple pink berries (each to 1/2” diameter) that ripen in September and remain on the plant after leaf drop into late fall or early winter.

Problems

No serious insect or disease problem. Anthracnose and powdery mildew may occur.

Garden Uses

Shrub border, screen or hedge. Naturalize in open woodland areas. Because of suckering habit, plants may be useful on slopes or banks.
