3-part Classes

Student investigating pitcher plant Let us come to you first! And last! Through multiple contacts with Garden staff, your students will learn about plant structures, plant adaptations, waste reduction, energy or sustainable building.

  1. A Garden Instructor will teach a one-hour introductory lesson at your location.
  2. Build on your students’ new-found knowledge in a two-hour outdoor trip to the Garden!
  3. Allow our Garden Instructor to connect all of the content for a final memorable one-hour lesson.
  • All components are aligned with local and national science standards. Selected 3-part classes are correlated to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Grade-level Expectations (view or download Field Trip GLE correlations)
  • Cost is $100 for the first class; $30 for each additional class; with a $3 per student material fee
  • Transportation to the Garden is the responsibility of the school
  • Mileage to the school is assessed at $1/mile over 20 miles

Plant Part Palooza
Grades K–2

Assorted vegetables What do apples and tomatoes have in common? How are white potatoes and sweet potatoes different? Students will love learning about plant parts and their functions through this hands-on exploration in their classroom and outside the Garden, where students will also plant seeds from an edible plant to take home.

Survivor MBG: Plant Adaptations
Grades 3–8

Cactus Why are leaves scented? Why do some plants eat insects? Why do some trees lose their leaves in the winter? Learn about these and other ways plant structures aid a plant species’ survival. Explore the Garden grounds in search of plant adaptations. Each student will plant a mini-succulent to take home.

The Power of Energy

Green Building Basics
Grades 6–8, 9–12

Building with shaded windowsWhat, exactly, does it mean to be a Green Building? And who decides how green they actually are? Students review the basics of building materials, energy use and other factors important to the design, construction and maintenance of a more sustainable building.

Scholarships Available

The Missouri Botanical Garden’s Education Department offers need-based scholarships so that every student has the opportunity to experience, explore, discover and learn at the Garden, the Shaw Nature Reserve and the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Both schools/organizations and individual students may apply.
