The success of ECO-ACT is defined by the skills and knowledge students gain through their participation in the program, as well as attitudinal change.
During the school year, high school students complete homework assignments (lesson plan synopses, curriculum evaluations, environmental issue analyses), environmental projects reviewed by staff and peers, and are evaluated as they teach in their fourth grade classrooms. These assignments, combined with participation in workshops and outings, are applied toward the students’ grade for the ECO-ACT class for which they receive course credit through their respective high schools.
Summative evaluations are given to ECO-ACT participants as well as their cooperating teachers and fourth grade students to assess the success and outcomes of the program at all levels. High school students also complete a pre- and post- participation survey on environmental, diversity, and self-awareness. Evaluation and survey results are utilized for planning and development of the next year’s program.
