Outreach Programs for Scout Groups

Let us bring the Garden to you! We are now offering several outreach options for Girl Scout and Cub Scout groups. Programs complete most requirements for several scouting awards. Program length is one hour.

Girl scouts working togetherPricing:
  • $60 per outreach program
    • Each additional hour $50
    • Mileage fees: no charge for less than 20 miles (each way); $1/mile if more than 20 miles (each way)
  • Maximum number of scouts: 20 (no siblings, please)
  • Maximum number of adults: 10 
  • Number of required chaperones:
    Grades PK–3: 1 adult per 5 scouts
    Grades 4–12: 1 adult per 8 scouts
  • Programs do not include any badges or awards 
Scheduling and Registration: 

  • Don't see a program below that interests you? Contact our Scout Instructor to build a program that fits your needs!
  • Programs are one hour in length and are available year-round. 
  • Registration for September–February outreaches begins July 15. Registration for March–August outreaches begins October 15.
  • Programs are scheduled Wednesday–Friday from 4:30–5:30 p.m. or 5:30–6:30 p.m. (times are flexible though, so if you need a different time, please inquire when scheduling your program).
  • Programs must be scheduled 3 weeks in advance.
  • The program fee is due 10 business days of receiving your tentative reservation via email from the Scout Instructor. Payment will not be accepted the day of your program.
  • The Missouri Botanical Garden reserves the right to cancel scheduled programs due to non-payment of fees.

For Girl Scout Daisies
Practice using resources wisely! Scouts will participate in a recycling relay, make a fun craft out of recycled materials and pot a beneficial plant to take home. This program meets requirements 1 and 2 for the Clover’s Petal.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

For Girl Scout Brownies
Explore the outdoors using your senses! Go on a mini scavenger hunt, listen for unique nature sounds and create a nature feel wheel. Scouts will plant a special houseplant to take home. Meets requirements 1, 2 and 5 of the Senses badge.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

For Girl Scout Juniors
Explore your carbon footprint. Investigate how energy is used in homes and schools and learn about how to reduce waste and use less in your daily routine. Have fun making jewelry from your old tee shirts! Pot a plant that will improve the air quality in your home. This program meets some requirements for the It’s Your World—Get Moving! Journey’s Investigate Award.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

For Girl Scout Cadettes
Get ready to know trees! Learn about tree anatomy and the interesting adaptations they use to survive. Scouts will use this knowledge to design their own dream tree house. Learn about the effects of logging, clear-cutting and deforestation and what you can do to help trees thrive for the benefit of future generations. Plant a houseplant to take home. This program meets requirements 1, 2 and 4 of the Trees badge.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

BirdBackyard Jungle
For Cub Scout Tigers
Seek out the fascinating creatures that live in your backyard! We’ll bring all the tools necessary for an in depth look at who’s living in your neighborhood. Learn how to identify the birds in your backyard and then build them a unique home. This program completes requirements 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the Backyard Jungle Tiger Adventure.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

Hands planting seeds in potGrow Something
For Cub Scout Wolves
Learn important gardening terms like "hardiness zone" and special tips to plan your own unique garden. Create a terrarium with tropical plants to start your gardening journey. Scouts will also plant a vegetable to take home too! This program completes requirements 1, 2 and 4 of the Grow Something Wolf Elective.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

WormsFur, Feathers and Ferns
For Cub Scout Bears
Take a scientific discovery walk with us! We'll employ methods used by Naturalists to go on a scavenger hunt for the animals that inhabit your neighborhood. Learn about an animal that has been extinct for more than 100 years. Search for wiggly worms in our vermicompost bin and plant a veggie to take home! This program completes requirements 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Fur, Feathers and Ferns Bear Achievement.

ForestInto the Woods
For Cub Scout Webelos
Examine “tree cookies” and learn about the science behind dendrochronology (the study of the life of a tree). Learn about tree parts, the common trees of Missouri and how these trees help us every day. Plant a house plant to take home as well. This program completes requirements 1, 2, 6 and 7 of the Into the Woods Webelos Elective.

Program length is 1 hour. This program is available year-round.

Scout Overnights

Take advantage of this rare opportunity to explore the Garden grounds at night while you work towards a badge! Meet other scout groups! Spend a night sleeping under the stars! Learn more

We now offer programming to American Heritage Girls! Bring your troop to the Garden or Shaw Nature Reserve, or we can come to you. Learn more
