Dear Garden Friend,

Since the moment Diane and I arrived in St. Louis in 2010, members of the Missouri Botanical Garden have been remarkably hospitable.  To thank you for making us feel welcome, we invite you to accompany us for a nine-day trip to Ireland, where we can share with you the beauty and history of the place we used to call home.

Diane and I will lead this excursion.  We will experience the best of the Ireland’s art, architecture, history, and of course gardens.

Among highlights of the trip will be:

  • A visit to the garden of Helen Dillon, renowned writer, lecturer, and broadcaster on all things garden-related. Enjoy a glass of wine with Ms. Dillon as you experience her brilliant landscape. The vantage point of the garden from her drawing room has emerged as one of the most photographed scenes in contemporary gardening.
  • The Burren, Ireland’s great natural garden, which features 700-foot coastal cliffs, nesting seabirds, and a rare combination of plants that grow in the high mountains and in warmer coastal climates.  We will be there during the showy season of several unusual orchids.
  • The Gardens at Dunloe Castle, where we will see the wild grandeur of lakes and mountains, rarities of the plant world, and a collection of ancient trees.
  • Dingle Peninsula, a mountainous finger in the Atlantic Ocean that is home to an estimated 2,000 archaeological monuments. I spent much of my childhood on this peninsula and know its history, flora, and antiquities quite well.
  • Powerscourt Gardens, perhaps the most photographed landscape in all of Ireland.
