The Shaw Nature Reserve is a nature photographer’s dream! Located just outside of St. Louis, its 2400-acres feature beautiful tall grass prairies, interesting glades, oak-hickory woodlands and bottomland forest. Interspersed throughout the Nature Reserve are many aquatic habitats including wetland, ponds, a creek and the meandering Meramec River.

For over 40 plus years, the Nature Reserve has been proud to host numerous photography workshops conducted by nationally and internationally recognized photographers, including Ernst Haas in the early 80s, Jay Maisel in 2003, Jim Brandenburg in 2013, Sam Abell in 2015, and Arthur Meyerson in 2016.

Haas was a pioneer in the use of color film when it was introduced in the late 1940s and he quickly became recognized as a master of this new medium. Haas died in 1986 but among his legacy are the many students of photography whom he mentored and inspired, including internationally renowned nature photographers, Jim Brandenburg who delighted us during his workshop and presentation in 2013 and Jay Maisel who gave a wonderful lecture and workshop in 2003.
