Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates somewhat wide range of soils.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Pinus fenzeliana, sometimes commonly called Kwangtung pine, has a broad, upright growth pattern and typically matures in cultivation to a height of 25-35' (larger in the wild, including a recorded 100' tall tree). Features clumped, slightly upcurled, green and blue bi-colored needles, with five needles (1.5-3" long) per bundle. Cones typically grow 2-4" long. Smooth, glaucous branches. From the Kwangtung province of China. May be difficult to find in commerce.
Genus name comes from the Latin name for pines.
Problems
Susceptible to numerous insect and disease pests. Common insect pests include aphids, spider mites, scale, webworms, bark beetles and white pine weevil. Disease problems include various cankers, blights and rusts, including white pine blister rust which, although not considered to be a problem in Missouri, is a potentially fatal bark disease (species of Ribes being the alternate host). A healthy, well-maintained tree is likely to have few problems, however.
Uses
Kwangtung pine is somewhat slow growing, but over time will mature into an attractive, medium-sized pine tree that makes a good specimen for lawns or around houses.
