Noteworthy Characteristics
Leucothoe is a genus of around six species of evergreen shrubs native to eastern Asia and North America. They are commonly cultivated for their colorful foliage and nodding, urn-shaped flowers held in axillary or terminal clusters.
Genus name honors Leucothoe, one of the many loves of Apollo.
'Little Flames' is a dwarf, hybrid leucothoe cultivar that features an upright, compact growth habit and colorful foliage. It was discovered as a branch mutation of Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Zeblid'. Mature plants will reach up to 2' tall with a similar spread. The glossy, narrowly ovate, 2" long leaves emerge in spring with bright red coloration before maturing to dark green. The foliage turns shades of dark burgundy in fall and retains this color through winter. Axillary clusters of small, white flowers bloom in late spring. Commonly sold at nurseries and garden centers under the name LEAFSCAPE. This plant is protected by patent number PP25246.
Problems
Fungal leaf spot diseases can be problematic in years with cool, wet springs. Avoid overhead irrigation and provide adequate airflow around plants. Otherwise free of major pest or disease problems.
Uses
Woodland gardens, mixed borders. Low hedge. Suitable for use in large containers.
