What are these growths or galls on my spruce tree?

Spruce trees occasionally will develop growths or swellings on the ends of the branches. These growths, called galls, can be 1 to 2 1/2 inches long. Some may appear as tiny pineapples. They are caused by aphids and can best be controlled by picking and disposing of the galls when they first appear, before the galls open in late summer or fall. If the infestation is severe, spraying of an insecticide may be required. Malathion sprayed as the buds begin to open, will control the pests. Only spray if you had a severe problem last year. Preventative spraying is not required or recommended.
