Orchid discovery and appreciation have long carried reputations of being only for Western elites. The deeper story of orchids, however, includes brilliant enslaved horticulturists, Charles Darwin’s effort to help U.S. abolitionists, the expertise of Malagasy vanilla growers, and more tales of people who have utilized orchids for social justice.

Join historian and self-proclaimed “orchiholic” Erica Hannickel for a lecture and book signing to open the 2023 Orchid Show. Hannickel’s new book, Orchid Muse, offers a fascinating look at notable figures in orchid history and will be available in the Garden Gate Shop.

This program will be offered twice, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
