Biodiversity is both increasingly important and increasingly threatened due to human activity. Habitat destruction, global warming, and pollution threaten to wipe out 20-50% of Earth’s biodiversity. As centers of global population and consumption, cities are among the most responsible for biodiversity decline, yet they are also among the most capable to change global trends.

Biodiversity is the variety of all life on Earth.  It includes interactions among all species, and between species and their environments. In St. Louis, we can find biodiversity in native prairies of Forest Park, the crops grown in the city’s thriving urban farm scene, and even the wildflowers growing on roadway medians.

Individuals, private organizations, and local governments must all play a role in supporting biodiversity in the St. Louis region.  View local projects making an impact on biodiversity.

  • SWT Design, a local landscape architecture firm, incorporated permeable surfaces and native plants into their parking lot, showing that even our most urban spaces can become havens for wildlife.
  • Alberici construction company made biodiversity a key component of their LEED-certified corporate headquarters. Use of native prairie plants eliminate the need for an irrigation system, walking trails connect employees to nature, and retention ponds prevent stormwater runoff while providing habitat for migratory birds.
  • Earth Dance Farms grows a wide variety of sustainable produce, which prevents soil depletion, sustains wildlife, and allows for future agricultural productivity.

Biodiversity is a key part of local and global sustainability and provides many ecosystem services that are crucial to human well-being.  "Biological diversity is the key to the maintenance of the world as we know it." —Edward O. Wilson, The Diversity of Life

BiodiverseCity     St. Louis recognizes our region's reliance on biodiversity, the variety of life, and natural systems. We depend on biodiversity, not only for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat, but also for the basic health, livability and economic prosperity of our region.
