Full Contest Rules

  • Registration is free and open to builders of all ages.
  • Images of sculptures must be submitted by June 30 to be considered for preliminary judging. Only sculptures chosen as finalists from the online portion of the Challenge will be displayed at the Garden on July 12. Drop-in sculptures may NOT be submitted to the Garden for the showcase and finals.
  • Sculptures chosen for the Showcase and Final round must be brought ready to be displayed, secured with no loose parts. Construction will not be permitted on site.
  • Original LEGO® brick designs only. Sculptures made from kits will be disqualified. Only nature-themed sculptures or sculptures related to the Missouri Botanical Garden or its Family of Attractions (The Butterfly House and Shaw Nature Reserve) will be considered for competition.
  • All builders agree to have their sculptures on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, should their sculpture be chosen as a finalist. Finalists’ sculptures must be picked up by 5pm on Saturday, July 12. Sculptures not retrieved by this time will become property of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Missouri Botanical Garden is not responsible for damage to sculptures.
  • All finalists whose sculptures are chosen for display at the Garden will receive TWO complimentary passes to Missouri Botanical Garden and the Nature Connects: Art with LEGO® Bricks exhibit to use on the day of the showcase and finals, July 12, 2014 (one pass for the builder and one pass for a chaperone or guest). All other guests will be required to pay admission.
  • Missouri Botanical Garden retains the right to refuse entry to any sculpture it deems inappropriate for display.
  • Missouri Botanical Garden staff members, volunteers and their families may enter their sculptures for sharing on social media but are not eligible for judging or prizes.

Judging Criteria

Contest entries will be judged on:

  • Building skill
  • Creativity and originality
  • Interpretation theme
  • Presentation
A panel of staff/professionals will judge the first round of photo submissions. New York City artist and Nature Connects creator Sean Kenney will judge the final round.
Contest FAQs

Do I need to stay at the Garden for the entire day during the finals?

No, but you do need to pick up your entry by 5 p.m. Contestants are encouraged to spend the day at the Garden, enjoy the Nature Connects exhibit and hear exhibit creator Sean Kenney’s presentation. Sassafras Café in the Ridgway Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Terrace Café in the Kemper Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Is there a size limit?

Your creation must be on a base no bigger than 24 by 24 inches. The base can be wood, cardboard, a LEGO® flat base, etc. and can be decorated to fit with your project. Your completed project may be no taller than four feet tall.

Is there a theme for my creation?

Yes! Sculptures should reflect the natural world or the Missouri Botanical Garden or its Family of Attractions (The Butterfly House and Shaw Nature Reserve) to be eligible for competition.

What materials may I use?

Use your own LEGO®, DUPLO®, Mega Bloks® or other LEGO® compatible plastic bricks.

Are group entries allowed?

No, this competition is designed for individuals.

Can I build my sculpture on site?

No, you should create your sculpture off site, and submit a photo with your completed entry form at for first-round judging. Only sculptures that have been chosen from the online portion of the competition will allowed to be displayed at the Garden.
