What are the most effective insect repellents?

The right insect repellent applied properly can provide protection from ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers and lice. The most effective repellents are those which contain the active ingredient DEET. Examples of commonly available products which contain DEET are Muskall, 6-12, OFF and Woodsman. Most of these products are safe for applying directly to the skin but applying to clothing will also provide protection. Most repellents need to be reapplied periodically throughout the day in order to provide complete protection.

A product which can be applied to clothing but should not be used on skin is Permanone. One application can provide up to a full day protection from ticks and chiggers and will provide at least partial protection from other pests.
