How do I grow peas and beans?

Peas and beans are legumes and are good sources of protein as well as several important vitamins and minerals. Both are easy to grow. Plant beans in rows 18 to 24 inches apart with seeds about 2 inches apart in each row. Make second and third plantings two to three weeks apart for extended harvest. A late planting around August 1st will give good yields for harvest in early fall.

Beans are warm season vegetables and planting must wait until the soil is warm and all danger of frost is past.

Peas are cool season vegetables and will germinate in cool soils. Plant them as soon as the soil is dry enough to work in early spring as they grow best under cool moist conditions. You can make successive plantings two and three weeks after the first planting, or, if you prefer, plant all varieties early if you use ones with different maturity dates.

Sow peas in double rows about 6 inches apart. Space plants about one inch apart in each row.
