In this collection, you will find many of the plants that are housed in our Conservatory and are visited frequently by our butterflies.  In addition, many of the plants in our outdoor  butterfly gardens are also listed.

The first item for each plant is its Latin name and this link will take you to additional information about the species.

Callirhoe involucrata

Scientific Name: Callirhoe involucrata
Common Name: Purple Poppy Mallow
Native Location: Missouri, N. Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas
Description: Purple poppy mallow bears magenta, cup-shaped flowers beginning in late spring and continuing through the summer. It has attractive, palmate foliage and a sprawling habit, growing less than a foot tall, but up to three feet wide. It is a drought tolerant plant which grows naturally in Missouri in fields and along roadsides. Purple poppy mallow has a long taproot which makes it difficult to move or divide, but self-sown seedlings can be moved while still young. It is a host plant for the Checkered Skipper, a butterfly native to Missouri, and is a good source of both nectar and pollen to many native insects.
