Symphyotrichum novae-angliae

Scientific Name: Symphyotrichum novae-angliae
Common Name: New England aster
Native Location: Eastern North America
Description: The New England aster grows throughout Missouri in meadows and along roadsides and streams. It can reach 6-8' tall. The purple flowers with yellow centers appear in late summer. The flowers are very attractive to butterflies and the plants are a larval food source for both silvery checkerspot and pearl crescents. New England aster grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Plants can be cut back during the growing season until mid-July to encourage shorter, bushier plants.
