What should I do to prepare my scout for the program?
  • Wear shoes and clothes for a long outdoor walk (hiking is an included activity in each program at Shaw Nature Reserve).
  • Please have you scout bring a reusable water bottle. We have water bottle refilling stations and water fountains throughout the Botanical Garden (MBG). There are places to fill up water bottles at Shaw Nature Reserve (SNR) as well.
  • Be prepared for the weather—you will likely spend at least half of the program time outside at MBG and the entire time outside at SNR.
  • Shirts and shoes must be worn at all times
  • Ticks and chiggers are often observed at SNR therefore insect repellent is recommended.
  • Scouts must remain with the group at all times.
  • Please remember that the Garden’s plants are living things and should be treated respectfully. Please do not pick leaves, flowers, fruits, etc.
  • Conservatories (the Climatron, Temperate House and Linnaean House) contain exotic plants that should not be touched. Plant material found in conservatories should not be collected even if it is lying on the ground.
  • Please walk on paths or on grassy areas surrounding the planting beds. Do not enter the planting beds, however, or walk in mulched areas around trees.
  • Please avoid running and rough play, even in the Children’s Garden. Be safe and be respectful of other guests.
  • Adults will be asked to turn off cell phone ringers during facilitated programs to minimize disruptions. Supervision of scouts should be their primary focus during the visit, and to keep phone conversations, texting and social conversations to a respectful minimum.
How much of the Missouri Botanical Garden or Shaw Nature Reserve will we see during our program?

You will likely see just a small portion of the Missouri Botanical Garden or Shaw Nature Reserve during your program. If you would like to visit the site before your program, normal admission rates will apply.

What if we are going to be late?

Please contact us at (314) 577-5140 if you are going to be late.

Where can we eat?

At Missouri Botanical Garden:
You should make arrangements to eat before or after your program as no outside food is allowed on Garden grounds (this includes the parking lot). However, you may visit the Sassafras Café located in the Ridgway Visitor Center; lunch is served 11 a.m.–3 p.m.). You may not bring your outside lunch/snacks to the Café.

At Shaw Nature Reserve:
Picnic tables and trash bins are located on the grounds and food is permitted.

Where do we check in when we arrive?

Please check your confirmation email from the Scout Instructor for the location of your scout workshop. Meet the Scout Instructor at the designated location.

Can I bring siblings?

Sorry, you may not bring siblings to scout badge workshops.

However, you may make arrangements for siblings to explore the Garden or Shaw Nature Reserve with an adult (regular admission fees apply) and meet up with the group when the program is over.

Do I have to stay with the group?

All chaperones must stay with the group during the program.
