Warm up at the Butterfly House This Winter

Take Advantage of our Tropical Conservatory and Themed Events!

(CHESTERFIELD): Warm up in the tropical conservatory of the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House this winter with fun, themed events. The Butterfly House, where the conservatory is kept at a toasty 85 degrees every day, is the perfect place for a winter outing. Plus, we have several special events in store for the colder months!

 

Hot! Hot! Hot!

WHEN: Jan. 26 and 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE: Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, 15193 Olive Blvd., Chesterfield, Mo.

This tropical-themed, kid-friendly event features music, crafts, and live animal encounters. Wade through the Exhibit Hall to see marsh-friendly bugs, swamp-themed activities and more. For families with kids of all ages.

 

Activities are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days and are included with Butterfly House admission.

 

Check out a selection of fun, educational crafts and games. Dance to the groovy sounds of live steel drums from 1 to 3 p.m. See if you can coax a hermit crab out of its shell at our hermit crab encounters. Get your face painted in funky colors to celebrate the day. Meet the Frog Princess between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

 

Don’t forget to grab a picture to remember the day in a photo booth sponsored by Renewal by Andersen before you go!

 

Visitors can also enjoy the 8,000 square-foot glass conservatory, which is home to 1,500 butterflies, lush tropical plants, and a waterfall. It will make you feel like you’re on an exotic holiday, without having to have a passport.

 

Morpho Mardi Gras

WHEN: Feb. 1- March 31, Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Just a few days after Hot! Hot! Hot! The Butterfly House morphs into a family-friendly Mardi Gras party with Morpho Mardi Gras: Bugs, Butterflies and Beads.

 

Marvel at the more than 2,000 blue morphos that create a sea of blue in the balmy conservatory, where they will join another 1,500 free-flying butterflies.  Let the good times roll during this festive season with these and other majestic creatures. Take in the sights of the Bugs on Parade, make a masquerade mask, and immerse yourself in the sea of blue morphos.

 

Visitors can also learn about the critical role butterflies play in nature, and how the Butterfly House is involved with butterfly conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

 

Morpho Mardi Gras is at the Butterfly House all February and March and included with regular admission. The Butterfly House is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Friday Night Flights:

Can’t make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras? Celebrate closer to home at the Butterfly House with Friday Night Flights.

 

Dine on themed appetizers and dessert from Championship Catering and experience new wines and other libations, from local vendors, in the midst of jazz music. Don a masquerade mask and snap a festive photo with friends in the photo booth. Stroll through the temperate conservatory and spy on 2,000 bright blue morphos, as they settle down for the evening.

 

Enjoy a meet and greet with a special guest from the Endangered Wolf Center and take home a souvenir tasting glass. Adults 21 and up; Space is limited. Reservations Required.

 

Partners at the event this year include Logboat Brewing Co., National Blues Museum, Championship Catering, Endangered Wolf Center, Edg-Clif Winery, Urban Chestnut, Renewal by Andersen, and Syncopation Wines by Ward on Wine.

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House of the Missouri Botanical Garden is located in St. Louis County’s Faust Park at 15193 Olive Blvd. in Chesterfield, Mo.
