With school officially out for summer, the Butterfly House has you covered when the kids get “buggy” and you all need to get out of the house. Escape to Summer Buggin’ at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House!

Summer Buggin’ runs from June 1 to Aug 31, featuring daytime and evening experiences for all ages.

During the day, explore our exhibits using a special decoder to become a "nature sleuth," get up close at a live animal encounter, sprout new knowledge at the Plant Outpost, and learn what makes fireflies glow. Special daily programming features of Summer Buggin’ include, for the first time in the Butterfly House’s 21-year history, daily butterfly releases at 2 p.m.

The Butterfly House is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Daily programming is included with regular Butterfly House admission.

In addition to the thematic exhibits, Summer Buggin’ encompasses various events to celebrate the season.

On June 9, spend World Swallowtail Day at the Butterfly House. Search for the swallowtails in the Tropical Conservatory and Native Butterfly Garden. Learn about the World Swallowtail Trust and how they are working to protect endangered species of swallowtails. Children will make a watercolor butterfly to take home and adults will be inspired to create a butterfly garden that will attract swallowtails their own backyards.

In July, attend a double birthday party for the Butterfly House and the Very Hungry Caterpillar as the iconic storybook character turns 50. The Birthday Bash, on July 20 and 21, will be filled with a storybook walk, photo booth, crafts, beautiful butterflies, and storytime with the Very Hungry Caterpillar himself. Birthday Bash will run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Activities are included with admission.

Summer Buggin’ features a Summer Buggin’ Festival Series. It kicks off with the Firefly Festival on Friday, June 21. Admire Earth’s living lanterns with activities showcasing their amazing talents. Join Butterfly House staff on a flashlight tour of the tropical conservatory and an outdoor journey to see real fireflies.

On Friday, July 12, learn about all the amazing things frogs can do and how you can protect them in your neighborhood at the all-new Frog Festival.

Wrap up the festival season with the new Flight Festival on Friday, August 2. Celebrate butterflies, dragonflies, and all the other amazing winged creatures of summer. Look for butterflies and other flying insects in our native garden. Participate in activities that capture the wonder of flight and learn more about the science behind it all.

All festivals are for adults and families with kids of all ages. For adults 21 and over, don’t miss Fireflies After Dark on Friday, June 28. The evening event includes delicious appetizers from Sugarfire Smokehouse-Winghaven, sampling of libations from local breweries and distilleries, a photo booth, and a moonlight stroll to see fireflies. Learn what makes these little beetles twinkle while having an evening out, like no other.

Festivals and other special events may require early registration and additional fees. Visit butterflyhouse.org to learn more.
