After a two-week closure to address flood damage in the facility, the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House will be reopening its doors to the public on Wednesday, November 20, just in time for the holiday season.
On Tuesday, November 5, during the heavy rains and severe storms, the Butterfly House’s basement level took on several feet of floodwater. Thankfully, no animals or humans were harmed or exposed to the floodwaters as the damage was isolated to the basement level. Though the main level of the Butterfly House was not damaged, some building systems needed repairs before the facility could reopen.
The Butterfly House closed its doors for two weeks while damage was being assessed and repaired, taking proactive steps to care for animals at the facility and partnering with the Saint Louis Zoo to transfer incoming animals into their care.
“Equipment can be replaced and repaired, but our priority is the welfare of our animals and plants,” noted Butterfly House Director, Jennifer Mullix. “We are grateful that the Saint Louis Zoo could rehome our chrysalid shipment. Seeing our staff work so hard to get us back up and running, before Enchanted Fairy Gardens, has been incredible.”
The Butterfly House was able to make repairs quickly and will reopen its doors to the public Wednesday, November 20, just in time for the holiday season which includes traditions like Supper with Santa and new Bonus Mondays in December.
