Green Living Festival Passport
Pick up a Passport at a Festival Welcome Table. Receive a stamp at THREE of the FIVE Green Living Festival events to be eligible to win prizes including memberships to the host organizations and items donated by our exhibitors!

 

This event takes place Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110).

Entrance to the Green Living Festival is included with regular entry to the Saint Louis Science Center where general admission is FREE.

11 a.m.   Too Good To Waste logo Battle Climate Change by Reducing Food Waste

Dr. Jess Watson of earthday365 will talk about how food waste connects with climate change and how you can join the Summer Food Waste Challenge—visit earthday365's table in the GROW Pavilion to sign up!

With a focus on positive local solutions, this new project taps into the power of personal stories to inspire and celebrate action for change. January Kiefer tells "Where the Wonder Lies". Jean Ponzi tells “My Eco-Logical Feelings”.
3 p.m.   yard St. Louis Open Yards – Native Gardens for Charity
Mitch Leachman
The St. Louis Open Yards program features dozens of private native plant landscapes around the region available for visitation. This session will outline the program and how you can participate and support a network of 25 local charities.

Join Maddie for a tour highlighting the ways we grow or try to grow food sustainably in the United States. Participants will be introduced to a variety of plants grown on the grounds of the GROW Gallery and efforts to increase sustainability. 
2 p.m.   bee hiveThe Birds and the Bees
Maddie Earnest, Saint Louis Science Center
Join Maddie for an in-depth tour of the chickens, bumble bees and honeybees housed in the GROW Gallery. Along the way explore the native plants and agricultural crops that feed our bees and our bellies. 

 

Family-Friendly Activities

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   kids in soil The Living Soil
Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, inside the GROW Pavilion
Students will learn about one of Earth’s most precious natural resources: Soil!
  • Dig through the soil and meet the local macrofauna.
  • Explore these organisms’ relationships through the soil web.
  • See different soil types and learn about physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil.
  • Learn about the importance of soil conservation.
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   benchBags 2 Bench
First Floor, GROW Landing
Check out a traveling bench made of recycled materials. The bench, produced by Ranken Technical Institute and made of Trex® materials, serves as a visual reminder that responsible recycling of plastic bags and wraps—the number one contaminant in the single-stream recycling process—matters. The first 300 guests will receive a colorful reusable bag.
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   alpacaAlpacas of Troy
Out by the "Big Red Combine", in the GROW Corral
Visit with this family-run operation to see and learn more about a variety* of baby farm animals. And hear about the production of yarn, and felted and knitted products, all of which are made from the alpaca fiber grown and spun here on the farm. *Animals on view day of event could include alpaca, goats, or pigs.

Energy Stage, Lower Level
Join us for Science Storytime at Energy Stage! Families will enjoy the interactive reading of a science themed story related to the Green Living Festival!

Omnimax Theater
Check out two options to view Wings over Water, a compelling story of three amazing bird species—the Sandhill Crane, the Yellow Warbler and the Mallard Duck—with extraordinary footage of their fascinating behaviors. All of them depend on the wetlands for their survival! Fee required. Learn more
1:15 p.m.   earthOur Changing Earth
Energy Stage, Lower Level
Join our educators at the Energy Stage as we shed some (infrared) light on the crucial topic of climate change. We will explore the effect of atmospheric changes on the Earth’s global ecosystem in this interactive demonstration.
