NatureSweet® Glorys™ Tomatoes are proud to bring the Homegrown Tomato Challenge back to St. Louis for the 50th event anniversary! The event will take place at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon to award the tastiest tomatoes and tomato recipes of 2013. Two grand prize winners will walk away with $2,500 each for the best tomato in both the large and small categories, while six runners-up will each receive $250 in retail gift cards. An additional $2,500 grand prize and two $250 runners up prizes will be given away this year to the winner of the NatureSweet Chef’s Challenge.

A panel of local Celebrity Judges will taste and rate the finalist tomato entries and the recipes created during the Chef’s Challenge and pick the winners and runners up. A Prize Ceremony will follow and all tomato entries will be donated to St. Louis Food Bank.

HOW TO ENTER: Details are available at any participating Dierbergs, Schnucks and Shop N Save stores in the St. Louis area, as well as at Missouri Botanical Garden. To enter the homegrown tomato skill contest, contestants may bring either three large or 10 small tomatoes in a labeled zip-close bag to the Cohen Amphitheater at Missouri Botanical Garden located at 4344 Shaw Boulevard in St. Louis on Saturday, August 24. Entries will be accepted from 9 – 11 a.m. CDT. No purchase or pre-registration necessary. ONE ENTRY PER HOUSEHOLD.

From its conception in 2003, the Homegrown Tomato Challenge has become increasingly popular year after year, with some contestants traveling distances of 1,500 miles or more to attend a competition being held in the nearest city. This unique competition has traveled across the country seeking the best tasting homegrown tomatoes from gardeners at 49 different events, in 28 different cities. In 2010 NatureSweet added the Chef’s Challenge competition to the Homegrown Tomato Challenge and received an overwhelmingly positive response from tomato lovers across the U.S. The 2013 Homegrown Tomato Challenge will kick off its three-city tour in St. Louis on August 24, then on to Denver on September 7, and will wrap up in Atlanta on September 14.
