Native Plant School is a year-round series of classes taught by the horticulture staff at Shaw Nature Reserve and covers various aspects of native landscaping. Join us in 2021 for Zoom webinars. Native Plant School webinars are supported by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the St. Louis Wild Ones Chapter.

A designed plant community, or green mulch, is a dense planting, with close spacing and high species diversity. The idea is to increase plant and wildlife diversity while decreasing maintenance. Though they aren’t maintenance-free, they take half the time to maintain, compared to a traditional landscape. For gardeners and property managers who value wildlife diversity, this is a great design style for a native garden. This style is more natural and requires adding paths, containers, benches, mowed edges and signs to give the garden an intentional look.
