Siproeta stelenes

Scientific Name: Siproeta stelenes
Common Name: Malachite
Native Location: Florida south through Central America
Host Plant: Blechum, Ruellia
Description: Malachite butterflies are sometimes common in Florida, but they are very much a tropical butterfly. The caterpillars are black and quite spiky, not a tasty mouthful. The adult enjoys feeding at our fruit trays, but will drink nectar from flowers too. They can also be found drinking water off the sidewalks ... frequently enough that you may have to watch you step!
