The sciences, methodologies, values, and policy of ecological restoration and allied restorative activities, especially as they affect ecosystem 'health' and human health and wellbeing at landscape and higher spatial scales. Thus, how can biodiversity conservation, restoration, livelihood creation, and sustainable local social-economic development be pursued coherently? The evolutionary ecology, biogeography, and role in ecological restoration of trees native to arid, semi-arid, and mediterranean-climate regions. See Desert Trees database.

Research Emphases Improving effectiveness and supporting greater integration of science-based, participative ecological restoration of degraded ecosystems as part of coherent programs for conservation, restoration, livelihoods, and sustainable stewardship of the ecosystems and landscapes on which we all depend. The science and research and networking needed to accelerate expand the benefits to ecosystems and people of ecological restoration and related restorative activities, with special emphasis on public health in rural and urban areas. Desert trees and canopies of hot and cold deserts of the world and their micro symbionts : especially related to their roles in ecological restoration, regenerative agroforestry systems, and urban ecosystem revitalization.
