Meet Our Summer 2023 Interns!

Hello, my name is Alberto Linares-Cervantes! Currently I am studying at Southeast Missouri State University for my bachelor's degree in environmental science. When I'm not in class you can sometimes find me outside taking hikes, walks, and just enjoying the outdoors! My path towards my degree has led me to EarthWays for an internship this summer because I have had previous experience with the Missouri Botanical Garden in the past as an Outdoor Youth Corps member. As well I was seeking to get more experience with hands on work as well as the office side of the environmental field. So far it has been a great experience learning about the day-to-day procedures and meeting other individuals who have taught me so much about a field I'm so passionate about!

Hello! My name is Kate Sherman and I am the Sustainability Education Intern for the Garden's EarthWays Center. As a St. Louis native, I grew up going to the Garden and am very excited to be working here! I am going into my junior year at Sarah Lawrence College studying Developmental and Environmental Psychology. In my first two years at Sarah Lawrence I took classes on the sociology of the built environment and environmental psychology, with an emphasis on the relationship between children and the natural environment. In those classes, I did independent research on the cognitive, emotional, and social benefits that nature has on children. Through this research, I became very interested in ensuring that children have access to the natural environment.

As an intern with the EarthWays Center, I am able to learn more about sustainability and use the knowledge that the Garden has to educate others in the St. Louis community. I am very passionate about connecting young people with nature and sustainable practices. I look forward to connecting with educators to work towards more robust sustainability education.

Outside of my work at the Garden, I enjoy hiking, reading, and kayaking in the Ozark Riverways. I also love to sew and enjoy upcycling clothing!
