The Garden offers unpaid internships designed for you to obtain academic credit or credentials to fulfill requirements of an apprenticeship or to experience professional development, perhaps in an area new to your career.  Unpaid interns receive free admission to the Garden, as well as discounts at our retail shops and Sassafras Cafe during the internship period.

Butterfly House Education Intern

Education Intern    
Classification:  Part time, Intern (unpaid)
Dept/Div:  Butterfly House

Teach to a very diverse audience and see how a variety of concepts can be worked into a single lesson plan. Assist in adapting existing, and creating new, programming or short presentations to be used for general public visitors. Other responsibilities will include helping with classes and Outreach programs. Interns will have direct interaction with the public on a regular basis. Interns may be involved with the following areas of our education program:

Provide structured presentations to students and informal opportunities to guests to learn more about butterflies, invertebrates and their environments using live insects.

Help with outreach programs throughout the metropolitan St. Louis area for classes and groups.

Staff the instructional cart, a hands-on area, where guests can touch cocoons, insect molts, and many other items.

Help with the development of new program content

Qualifications:
Excellent communication skills
Enthusiastic demeanor
Self-starter
Interest in working with people
Coursework in communications, public relations and/or management

Requirements:
Ability to work some weekends
140 hours minimum commitment (or more to meet school requirements)
2.5 cumulative GPA or higher

High school seniors entering college in the fall are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Internship dates: (3½ months)
Summer: May – mid-August (application deadline: March 1)
Fall: September – mid-December (application deadline: August 15)
Spring: mid-January – April (application deadline: November 15)
Hours: part time/20 hours per week; full time/37.5 hours per week
