Conservation at the Missouri Botanical Garden extends beyond protecting plant species and their natural environments. The Garden's Peter H. Raven Library is globally recognized as one of the most comprehensive libraries of botanical literature in the world, and its Rare Book Collection contains more than 6,500 volumes. One gem is James Bateman's The Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatemala.

Bateman's enormous 19th century book exemplifies "orchid mania" in its opulence and elegance. Explore a selection of illustrations and text excerpts and learn how the Library's book conservator will repair this extraordinary volume.
