This is a beautiful small scale tree with all-season interest. The catkins elongate and dangle in spring, the hop-like seed pods are interesting to look at in summer, and that beautiful shaggy bark is great throughout the year. This beautiful small-scale tree has a place in any landscape.

This under story tree has always been a pleasure to happen upon, no matter what season. It is no longer common in my area due to urban development and is often confused with young American Elm trees, as the leaf and bark structure can be similar. It is unfortunate that this species seems to be overlooked as a valuable and attractive Landscape or parkway tree. It's size structure and insect and disease resistance should be more often taken into account. I would highly recommend the use of this under story tree in a managed woodlot or woody landscape and in educating the public in order for it's future outlook to remain high.
