Noteworthy Characteristics
Phlox is a genus of about 70 species mostly native to North America that are grown for their showy flowers.
The genus name is derived from the Greek word phlox meaning flame in reference to the intense flower colors of some varieties.
'Fashionably Early Princess' is a hybrid garden phlox selection that features a profuse display of fuchsia pink blooms in summer with repeat blooming into fall. This cultivar was selected from seed grown plants resulting from a cross between Phlox maculata 'Alpha' as the seed parent and Phlox 'Amethyst Pearl' as the pollen parent. The fragrant, 1" wide blooms are held in terminal, compound corymbs. Mature plants will reach up to 3' tall with a similar spread. US plant patent number PP28680 applies to this cultivar.
Problems
Susceptible to powdery mildew and root rot. Phlox bugs can be a significant problem some years. Taller stems may need staking.
Uses
Garden phlox is a staple of the perennial border.
