Acer is a genus of around 130 species of trees and shrubs native to temperate and tropical regions of Asia, North and South America, northern Africa, and Europe. They are characterized by their oppositely arranged, typically palmately lobed foliage and winged samaras. Many are cultivated for their fall color.

Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree.

'JFS-KW78' is a columnar maple selection that features branches that grow at a steep, upward angle and good fall color. It originated from a seed collected off of an open pollinated specimen of A. rubrum 'Armstrong' Mature plants will reach up to 40' tall and spread to fill a 12' area. The leaves turn shades of golden yellow to orange in the fall. The early spring blooms are not considered ornamentally significant. Commonly sold at nurseries and garden centers under the name ARMSTRONG GOLD. This plant is protected by patent number PP25301. Often sold under the species name A. rubrum (red maple).

Watch for aphids, leafhoppers, borers, scale and caterpillars. Verticillium wilt attacks the vascular system and can be fatal. Canker, fungal leaf spot and root rots may also occur. Wind and ice may break some branches.
