Culture

Best grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils with consistent and even moisture in full sun. Sharp soil drainage is essential. Although perennial, plants may be somewhat short-lived and are sometimes grown as annuals. Mulch well in winter to promote longer plant life. Plants may self-seed in the garden. Deadhead to encourage reblooming and prevent unwanted self-seeding. Pinch stems in spring to promote better branching and a bushy growth habit.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Lychnis is a genus of around 25 species of herbaceous perennials and biennials native to temperate regions of Africa, Asia, and Europe. They are commonly called campions or catchflies.

The genus name Lychnis is derived from the Greek word lychnos meaning a small, portable lamp. May refer to the ancient use of leaves of woolly species for wicks.

'Orange Gnome' is a compact, floriferous selection of hybrid campion that features 1.5" wide, bright, scarlet-orange blooms from early to mid-summer. Mature plants will reach 1.5' tall and spread to fill a 1' area. The dark green, ovate leaves can take on a bronzy-purple coloration. This cultivar is sold under various scientific names including Lychnis × arkwrightii and L. coronaria.
